A touring trip rides on its tyres. Money spent in this area will reap hassle free benefits in future.

The rule of thumb is that the fatter the tyre the greater the ability to handle unpaved roads, but the more the weight and the rolling resistance. So if you are primarily travelling on sealed roads, then a narrower tyre will suffice. The benefit of the narrower tyre will be a faster speed because of the lowered resistance of the tyre and lighter weight.

If you are primarily going cross country, or on dirt roads, then you need a fatter tyre to provide better stability and cushioning.

Instead of recommending a single make or style, its best to ask around and see what is offered. I use Vittoria tyres, with quite a narrow profile. The tyres have only had 2 flats in the last 3000km of riding, and work OK on unpaved roads.

Specific Touring tyres offer better protection against flats, with a heavier weight than usual commuting tyres. The Continental Touring Plus Reflex offers a good idea of what you can get.
