4 weeks to go.... Here are the main items we are taking to Turkey., The limiting factor isn't how much we can lug around on the bikes, but the fact we have to fly to get there on 2 international airlines. As a result we have to pack the bikes in boxes and scatter our gear around them in the 2 bike boxes.

These 2 bike boxes I see as being hellish to move around. Huge and heavy! Not a pleasant thought when you get to the airport. We are going to Germany first, and will leave the boxes there, then flying to Turkey and just putting cardboard around the bikes for that flight ditching it at the airport when we arrive. We also have a Bob trailer

Information on it Here Which contains a brilliant Yellow dri-bag and holds up to 30 Kilos or 70 lbs.

The Bob is a wonderful invention, by dividing the weight between the back wheel and the bob wheel its better for the bike, its easy to load, attach and remove. The suspension on the back means it can be used off-road, and certainly cushions the bumps and the resulting shock to the bike. Its been a learning curve on how to pack it. Initially I couldn't go over 40kmh as the bob fishtailed.

After one scare where I thought I was going to lose it at 50kmh downhill, but since then I found loading the tent at the very front and bottom of the bob has overcome the fishtailing. The bob is broken down into its component pieces for the flight, and the bag will be strapped to the bob body and used an baggage. We are also taking a tent. Now what sort of tent has been debated by many over the years. Most traveling tents are about 3kilos, and down to 1 kilo for a single man one we used to put 2 people in. But the one we have is a Fairydown Trios and weighs 5 kilos. The picture below doesn't do the size justice. The enclosed part is long enough for me to stretch out head at the door end, and almost stretch out across the tent as well.

More on the tent here Why such a big tent that fits 4 people? At the end of the day there is nothing nicer than being able to stretch out and relax. The tent has an amazing vestibule with enough space to easily store our gear and still stretch out. The cost in terms of weight, is only about an extra 2 to 3 kilos, about the same as a few books.

The bikes are elderly, a Specialized touring bike and an old Reiker road bike. Strength and reliability are more important than new technology. Finally we have a couple of Phillips rear panniers again made of dri-bag material. That all! We are actually traveling quite light compared to others we have seen.

As we expect the temperatures to be nice, we don't need much cold weather or wet weather gear. One of the good things about cycling is that we can't buy much. With great sadness I will point to the bob when hawkers try to sell us carpets, clothes and fake antiquities. Here is a quick pic of our gear from the Buller Gorge in New Zealand.
